Augusta Precious Metals Review
Augusta Precious Metals says it has operated since 2012 and focuses on physical gold and silver, including purchases made through self-directed IRAs. Its current published Gold & Silver IRA minimum is $50,000.
What Augusta says it does
Augusta describes a process in which a self-directed IRA is established with a custodian, eligible funds are transferred, and the investor chooses gold or silver that is then stored at a non-government depository. The IRA structure, not Augusta’s marketing, determines the tax treatment.
Published minimum
Augusta currently states a $50,000 minimum for its Gold & Silver IRA offering. The company separately markets a one-on-one educational web conference to retirement savers with $100,000 or more in savings. Those are company thresholds, not IRS-mandated Gold IRA minimums.
Published fee example
Augusta's current Equity example shows a $50 custodian application fee, $125 annual custodian fee and $100 sample non-government depository storage fee. That produces a $275 first-year example and $225 recurring annual example. Confirm the actual custodian/depository and written fees that apply to your account.
Strengths to investigate
- Clear published minimum.
- Public fee example for a common custody/storage arrangement.
- Education is emphasized before the transaction.
- Company materials discuss the roles of custodian and depository rather than presenting the dealer as the IRA itself.
Tradeoffs
- $50,000 is a high minimum relative to some competitors.
- Physical precious metals can lose value and do not generate interest or dividends.
- Custody and storage create ongoing costs.
- The actual purchase and repurchase spread on metals can materially affect results and should be requested before buying.
Questions to ask Augusta
- What is my total first-year and annual cost?
- What exact metal products are being proposed, and why?
- What is today’s purchase price and today’s repurchase price for the same item?
- Which custodian and depository will be used?
- What happens if I later want to sell or take an eligible distribution?
