Can You Store IRA Gold at Home?

IRS guidance creates substantial risk for arrangements that place IRA bullion in the investor’s personal possession.

What the IRS says

The IRS FAQ on IRAs says bullion qualifying for the collectibles exception must be in the physical possession of a bank or an approved non-bank trustee. Publication 590-B says the qualifying coins must be in the possession of the IRA custodian or trustee.

Why promoter claims are not enough

Some promoters market “home storage IRA” structures. Because an incorrect structure can trigger tax consequences, this is an area for qualified tax/legal advice—not a marketing shortcut.
