Gold IRA Rules

Gold IRAs are still IRAs. The precious-metals component adds special rules about collectibles, qualifying coins/bullion and custody.

Collectibles rule

IRS Publication 590-B says an IRA investment in a collectible can be treated as a distribution. Metals and coins are generally included in the collectibles definition, but there are exceptions for specified coins and certain bullion.

Possession matters

The same publication states that qualifying coins must be in the possession of the IRA custodian or trustee. IRS FAQ guidance also addresses the physical-possession requirement for bullion.

Ordinary IRA rules still apply

Contribution, distribution, rollover and tax rules depend on the IRA type and transaction. A precious-metals label does not create a separate tax code.
