Rollover guide

401(k) to Gold IRA Rollover

An eligible 401(k) distribution can often be rolled directly to an IRA, but not every plan distribution qualifies.

Direct rollover

The IRS says a plan participant can ask the administrator to make an eligible payment directly to another retirement plan or IRA. Taxes generally are not withheld from a direct rollover amount.

Distributions that may not be eligible

IRS 401(k) guidance lists examples such as required minimum distributions, hardship distributions and certain periodic payments.

Order of operations

  1. Confirm that the amount is eligible for rollover.
  2. Choose an appropriate IRA custodian/trustee.
  3. Confirm the account’s fees and permitted investments.
  4. Then evaluate precious-metals dealers and qualifying products.
Tax caution: Verify your specific transaction with the plan administrator/custodian and an appropriate tax professional before moving retirement assets.
